How to make ChatGPT read its answers aloud automatically

ChatGPT's built-in read aloud plays one message when you click the speaker icon under it. To hear every answer automatically, add the Auris extension to Chrome. It starts speaking the moment ChatGPT begins streaming a reply, skips code blocks, and runs on your device, with keyboard shortcuts to pause or skip.

Set it up in four steps

  1. 1
    Add Auris to Chrome

Install Auris from the Chrome Web Store, then activate the license key from your purchase email. It takes about a minute.

  2. 2
    Open ChatGPT

Go to chatgpt.com/ in Chrome. If the tab was already open, refresh it once so Auris can attach.

  3. 3
    Ask anything and listen

Auris starts reading the answer aloud as it streams, sentence by sentence. A small player appears in the corner so you can pause, skip, or stop.

  4. 4
    Control it from the keyboard

Alt+A reads the latest answer or selected text, Alt+P pauses, Alt+S skips a sentence, and Alt+X stops. On a Mac, Alt is the Option key.

Option 1: ChatGPT's built-in read aloud

Under each ChatGPT reply there is a speaker icon. Click it and ChatGPT reads that message aloud in one of its own voices. It is free and needs nothing installed.

The trade-off is that it works one message at a time: you click it for every answer, which does not suit hands-free listening. ChatGPT also has Voice mode, a spoken back-and-forth conversation. That is a different experience from typing a question and hearing the written answer.

Option 2: Auris, hands-free as the answer streams

  • Automatic. Every new answer is read without clicking anything.
  • No waiting. Speech starts with the first sentence, while ChatGPT is still writing.
  • Skips the noise. Code blocks, tables, and equations are announced instead of read symbol by symbol.
  • Same habit everywhere. It also works on Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, with the same player and shortcuts.
  • Private. Your conversations never leave your device.

Which one should you use?

If you only want to hear an occasional answer, ChatGPT's speaker icon is enough. If you want to listen to every answer while you cook, walk around the room, or rest your eyes, an automatic reader like Auris saves the repeated clicking and starts speaking sooner.

Tips for better listening

  • Open the Auris menu to pick a voice. Chrome on Windows and macOS includes several natural-sounding voices, so try a few.
  • Set the speed between 0.7x and 2x. Many people settle a little above normal once they are used to it.
  • Ask ChatGPT for shorter answers or bullet points when you plan to listen rather than read.

Questions

Can ChatGPT read its answers aloud automatically?

The built-in read aloud works per message, when you click the speaker icon. To have every new answer read automatically in Chrome on desktop, use an extension such as Auris.

Does Auris read while ChatGPT is still writing?

Yes. Auris begins speaking once the first sentence is complete and keeps pace as the rest of the answer streams in.

Will it read my old messages?

No. Auris only reads new answers as they arrive. To hear the most recent answer again, press Alt+A.

Does it work in the ChatGPT desktop or phone app?

No. Auris is a Chrome extension, so it works at chatgpt.com in Chrome on a computer. It does not run inside the ChatGPT desktop or mobile apps.

Is it private?

Yes. Auris reads the conversation already on your screen and speaks it with your device's own voices, inside your browser. Your conversation text never leaves your device. The only network call Auris makes is checking your license key with our payment provider.

How much does Auris cost?

Auris installs free from the Chrome Web Store, and reading aloud unlocks with a yearly license: $9.99/year at the founding price, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Hear your AI, out loud.

Auris reads ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity answers aloud the moment they start streaming. Your conversations never leave your device.
